It was a night of gratitude at the TecH2O Center, honoring the small army of volunteers who make public outreach possible throughout the year. TecH2O staff members celebrated volunteers’ tireless service at its annual awards banquet Nov. 8.

Volunteer Coordinator Dawn Walker-Hughes recognized about 50 volunteers, business partners and EPWater employees who contributed valuable time to events such as Discover E, the Texas Waters Lecture Series and Science Saturday @ TecH2O.

Gain celebrated

Over the past year, 60 volunteers donated more than 800 hours for the TecH2O, Walker-Hughes said. The total marked a 13 percent increase from the past year, she said, acknowledging that most of the volunteers are students from El Paso Community College and the University of Texas at El Paso.

Aside from students, others who made an impact were from organizations including Texas Master Naturalist program, Texas Master Gardener Association, the International Boundary and Water Commission and Carollo Engineers Inc.

Giving back

Volunteers are special people, said Leslie Grijalva, Clean Rivers Program Manager, IBWC.

“Volunteers are in a very special position because not only do we donate our time to something we enjoy, but we get to teach others about it as well,” she said. “We give back.”

The night’s top awards went to:

  • Partner of the Year: Texas Master Naturalist program
  • Person of the Year: Leslie Grijalva, Clean Rivers Program Manager, IBWC
  • Volunteer of the Year: Laura Alaniz

TecH2O always has the welcome sign out for volunteers, Walker-Hughes said. For more information, please contact her at 915-621-2002 or email
