Sum of the Parts - Surface Water

Students demonstrate how everyone contributes to the pollution of a river as it flows through a watershed and recognize that through individual and group action, the amount of pollution can be reduced.

  • Differentiate between point and non-point source pollution.
  • Recognize that everyone contributes to and is responsible for a river or lake’s water quality.
  • Identify Best Management Practices to reduce pollution.

Springing into Action - Groundwater

Students will actively simulate the process of water infiltrating down gradient through varying soil layers, saturating the soil above an impermeable layer, flowing along an impermeable layer and naturally exiting the ground at a spring.

Stormwater Simulation - Stormwater

A hands-on activity where students will learn how storm water moves across  permeable and impermeable surfaces.

 Learning Objectives

  • List ways that humans alter and modify the physical environment.
  • Identify how humans impact water quality.
  • List, describe and compare solutions for managing storm water runoff.
  • Explain how storm water impacts a natural landscape and human-made cityscape.
  • Describe how solutions that mimic nature can capture, store, and filter water.

Super Bowl Surge II - Wastewater

Demonstrate how wastewater systems can be overwhelmed and then do in-depth research and present action plans to solve the problem of increased demands on a community’s wastewater treatment plant.

  • Explain problems with sewage overflow.
